Do Games Consoles Make Good Gifts?

Let’s face it, not a year goes by without one of the big 3 companies launching a new computer games console.

The decision that many of us face, is which one to buy….. Don’t get me wrong, the fanatics buy them all as they come along, queuing up at all hours for a glimpse of the very latest in technical wizardry.

For the more down to earth of us, money isn’t finite, so we’re looking for value for money and longevity of the support that goes along with a purchase of a gaming console. I remember buying an original Sony Playstation, at a time when the games were no longer being supported, or for that matter, developed any more….

One of the latest offerings, which I truly believe to be well supported, is the Nintendo Wii.

The television adverts are still pushing the product, the peripherals are excellent, and unlike the more mainstream offerings, this is a truly family affair. Even fitness is supported with the new Wii Board.

In my opinion, and having even worked in the games industry, the Nintendo Wii makes the ideal gift for that special family member. I have no doubt that there’ll be laughs-a-plenty, and you won’t always be worrying about how future proof it is. Unfortunately, I cannot say the same for Sony‘s or Microsofts offerings.

No doubt, the latest release is just around the corner, please choose carefully. Don’t waste your money on what can easily be described as “a dead duck”. My advice is to get the Wii.

Panasonic 32" LCD Screens – Which One Should I Choose?

Panasonic have won just about every award going for their last few ranges – if you pick a Panasonic 32″ LCD you’re definitely following the advice of most of the major AV magazines.  They’re not the cheapest LCD screens on the market but do offer outstanding quality and a superb viewing experience.  Here we run down three of  the best choices of 32″ Panasonic screens

The Panasonic TX-32LXD85 is actually the top of the range 32″ model from their last range – it’s still available at the major electrical retailers and often at a bargain price.  This model received great reviews and performance is arguably very similar to the current range – the TX32LXD85 model had upgraded speakers so the sound should be better than the ’80′ model.   You can often get a really good price on this model but they are no longer being manufactured so if you spot one you like get it then as it may be the last one you see – it’s a top quality Panasonic 32 LCD screen for a often a bargain price.

The next model is the Panasonic TX-32LZD80 which is part of Panasonics latest range the LZD – Which magazine rated it as ‘just about the best 32″ LCD Screen you can buy” .  All round perfomance is excellent and it’s yet to receive a bad review from any of the digital press or major AV magazines.  It’s quite a straight forward choice if you’ve ruled out the older model above – if you’re not too bothered about sound (or you’re attaching a home cinema system) this is probably the best Panasonic 32 LCD screen for you.

If you don’t want more wires and still want better sound then the Panasonic TX-32LZD85 is probably the correct choice – the TX32LZD85 has much improved speakers built into the frame – the 85 is the flagship model so there are also a couple of minor image processing improvements but the speakers are the main change.  If you are using external speakers it’s not worth the extra cash.

Whichever of the above HDTV screens you choose I’m sure you won’t be disappointed – all the current Panasonic 32″ LCD screens are at the top of the pile.

Sony PSP 2000 Slim Vs PSP 3000 – Review

The recently released Sony PSP Slim 3000 has caused quite a controversy among new PSP owners who purchased their Sony PSP Slim 2000 units within the last few months. It has not even been a full year since Sony released the PSP Slim 2000, with its biggest feature being the ability to connect to a TV through AV output. Many are arguing that Sony‘s latest addition to its handheld family should not even be considered an upgrade of the current model. Let’s take a deeper look into the features of the PSP 3000.

The 3000 was unveiled at the Leipzig gaming conference last week. The unit has the exact same dimensions as its counterpart, the Slim 2000. However, there were a few upgrades. Sony gave the PSP 3000 a new anti-glare screen, which is supposed to make playing the PSP while outside a bit more bearable. This new LCD screen also features a broader color palette than the older model, which accounts for a brighter, more vibrant picture. Along with this new screen, Sony added a built in microphone to the 3000, which will allow many people who have access to WiFi hotspots peppered through-out a large city to utilize the PSP as a phone-like device with the built in Skype software.

Along with these hardware improvements, the Slim 3000 also features a few cosmetic improvements as well. The ‘HOME’ button no longer exists, as it has been replaced by a PSN button. It functions exactly the same as the old button, but instead has the Playstation logo instead of the word ‘HOME’. Also, the brushed aluminum ring which was featured on both the PSP Fat, as it has become known, and the PSP Slim has been replaced with a more polished and thinner chrome ring. The edges of the PSP 3000 have also been smoothed a bit so that it feels more comfortable while holding it in your hand.

Sony PSP 3000 will be available this October, featuring the colors Piano Black and Mystic Silver. All in all, if you’re already a proud PSP 2000 Slim owner, you might want to skip this upgrade as the anti-glare screen is only a major upgrade if you find yourself playing a lot while outside. However, if you’re looking to purchase a PSP, the 3000 is the way to go.
